Timeless, natural, and easy on the land

Split rail fencing is an adaptation of the early American zigzag wood fences, and it remains one of the most charming and cost-effective ways to mark a boundary. Made from rough-sawn cedar split lengthwise into rails, it delivers a rustic look that suits farms, acreage, and country properties.

Split rail is simple in construction and ideal to build on hard or rocky ground. It works as a decorative front-property accent, an agricultural barrier, or a backdrop for landscaping - and it pairs well with welded-wire mesh if you need to contain pets or livestock.

Options

  • 2-rail and 3-rail configurations

Frequently Asked Questions

Can split rail fencing contain my dog?
On its own, split rail is more of a boundary marker than a containment fence. We can add welded-wire mesh along the inside of the rails to keep pets and small animals in while preserving the rustic look.
What wood do you use for split rail?
We use rough-sawn Western cedar, which is naturally resistant to rot and insects and weathers to a handsome silver-gray if left unfinished.
Is split rail good for sloped or rocky ground?
Yes - it is one of the easiest fences to build on uneven or rocky terrain because the rails can follow the grade and the posts do not require perfectly even spacing.
